An Easy Copywriting Formula

copywriting formula

Heard the word ‘copywriting’ but don’t know what it means? Or do you think that copywriting only applies to sales letters and you don’t need to bother with it? I’m about to show you why copywriting is important to everyone who is marketing online…

You may be confused about the term ‘copywriting’ and what exactly it means, let alone how to apply it. I’m about to show you a copywriting formula that is easy to remember…

Copywriting can be defined as the art of salesmanship in print though, these days, that can be equally applied to video, tweets, podcasts and even memes.

This is because copywriting, in its simplest form, is basically the use of persuasion to lead a prospect to become a buyer by the use of words. And, if you take that to its ultimate conclusion, you’ll realise that copywriting is an essential skill whenever or however you are creating a marketing message.

Whether you are creating a social media post or a promotional video or podcast; if the words you use are designed to grab people’s attention, pique their interest and lead towards a sale, you need to know this copywriting formula…

An Easy-to-remember Copywriting Formula

There are many formulae that advanced copywriters use, and each professional copywriter has their own technique that they’ve refined for their own use.

Thankfully you don’t have to worry about that. This is the basic Copywriting Formula that I use and is easy to remember thanks to its acronym AIDA.

AIDA stands for:

  • Attention
  • Interest
  • Desire
  • Action

First of all, you have to grab the viewer’s or listener’s Attention.

It’s said that these days, you have but a few seconds to do this. As someone scrolls down a Facebook News Feed or a list of YouTube videos, their eyes glance over words and images so quickly that you need to capture their Attention fast.

You might do this by means of an arresting image or headline or both. Nowadays it’s quite common to have a provocative headline and sub-head around a video, or as part of the video thumbnail, in order to arrest the viewer’s eyes and rouse curiosity.

Having grabbed their Attention you now have to keep their Interest. This is where the words in the social media post or video or podcast, or the content on your linked blog post or sales letter, take the prospect’s curiosity towards deepening their fascination.

You should be providing enough information, and raising questions in their minds, so that they want to know more.

As they move deeper into finding out more about you, your product or the service you are promoting, gradually you turn that Interest into Desire. By showing them the solution to their problem you’ll help them realise that they really want what you have to offer.

And then it’s a simple matter of taking that Desire one stage further by providing a Call To Action. This might be as simple as a Buy Button or Add To Cart Button or you might end up promising them a bonus if they take Action today.

Everything leads to the Action

Most marketers get it wrong by concentrating all their efforts on getting the sale. They dive straight into giving out the salespage link or trying to force people to click the buy button without even considering the flow of AIDA.

It’s a bit like a guy entering a bar and asking the first woman he meets to marry him. It’s just not going to happen, is it? Yes, there’s a remote chance of him bringing this off maybe one time in a million, but why ruin the opportunities open to you?

However, imagine if the same guy starts up a conversation with a suitable girl, asks her out on a date, and builds a relationship that leads to liking, trusting and, eventually, loving each other. Then, when he pops the question, chances are she’ll say yes and buy his proposal.

It’s the same in marketing. Build the relationship with your prospect, using the AIDA formula, before you ever propose your opportunity, product or service.

Use the AIDA copywriting formula in all your marketing and you improve your chances of turning viewers into prospects and prospects into sales immeasurably.

Set A Daily Routine For Success

daily routine

It is SO easy to appear to be busy all the time. And then you wonder why there’s not enough time to Get Things Done. Don’t panic – there is a way around this problem…

We like to think that we are busy, busy, busy as long as we are doing things which are work related. But are you actually getting things done? Here’s what a typical ‘busy working’ daily routine looks like…

You get home from the day job, have dinner and then open your laptop, or start up your PC, and your email Inbox automatically opens. You see a couple of emails that need answering and, after you’ve attended to those, there are a few more that you feel you ought to read.

One or two of them contain links to what looks like stuff you really ought to see, so you click through and spend some time watching a video or reading a sales letter for a product that you think might be of use.

But you’d better check out that product first, right? So you search for some reviews to see whether it’s any good and land on more videos or blog reviews.

You hear a ‘ping’ notification

Then you get a ‘ping’ – it’s a message on your phone that one of the people you follow has posted on Facebook. Well, you’d better check that out, hadn’t you? So you watch the video in that post and, oh yeah, there’s a few other things which have been happening on Facebook since you last checked in.

Finally, you glance at the time. OMG, you’ve already spent three hours on all this stuff and you haven’t even started what you meant to do. Never mind, you can get that done tomorrow. You tell yourself you’ve been busy, you’re worn out and it’s time for bed.

Except that, of course, when tomorrow comes the whole daily routine starts over again and you still don’t get that important task done.

Does that sound familiar?

Maybe this isn’t your daily routine, exactly, but you can see how easy it is to get distracted from the tasks you imagined you’d be doing when you first sat down at your computer.

Yet, because of the distractions, you got none of them done.

There are just not enough hours in the day

Most people spend all their time being busy, busy, busy and never even get started on the things that really matter.

They frequently complain that there are ‘not enough hours in the day‘ and wonder how successful people manage to do all the things that they do.

They probably think that these successful people are superhuman or have mastered the secret of multi-tasking.

Let me tell you – there IS NO SECRET! Multi-tasking DOES NOT WORK!

The real secret is to maintain FOCUS on what needs to be done to move you along the journey that is going to get you to your goal.

I’ve talked, in another post, about an App that you can use to set a daily routine that will ensure you Get Things Done (more about that later).

I’m about to show you the best way to FOCUS on those activities, using…

The Pomodoro Technique

In the late 1980s an Italian student named Francisco Cirillo was working on how to improve his focus during his study periods using a kitchen timer, one of those timers that is red and shaped like a tomato (pomodoro in Italian). His aim was to see how long he could maintain 100% focus without distraction.

He discovered that the optimum time to maintain 100% focus is 25 minutes.

After that he found out that a 3 to 5 minute break, before settling down to work for another 25 minutes, refreshed the brain so that you could, once again, achieve 100% focus.

It is fascinating to see how well this works if you will just try it for yourself.

  • Set a timer on your watch, phone or computer (there are several software apps available that offer a Pomodoro timer) for 25 minutes.
  • Put your phone into Airplane mode so you don’t get any notifications, then set to work and focus on doing ONLY the most important activity on your To-Do list.
  • As soon as your timer goes off, stop working immediately and take a 5 minute break. You can get yourself a drink of tea, coffee or water or, even better, take some exercise – walk around or do some press-ups or something similar.
  • Then start the timer again and focus for another 25 minutes.

Using a To-Do List or Success Wizard

Of course, this only works if your daily routine is to immediately start working on the most important activity on your To-Do List.

  • Make a list of what you know you need to focus on the night before. That will embed in your brain the urgency of having to get those activities done.
  • Then, when it is time to start work on those activities, DO NOT open your email Inbox and turn off all notifications from Facebook, Twitter and other social media apps.
  • Get started on your most important activity immediately you open your computer and focus for 25 minutes, as I’ve shown you.
  • Once you’ve spent 2 hours on your tasks, using the Pomodoro technique, take a longer break of 20 to 30 minutes.

Only when you’ve finished what you need to do can you open up your email Inbox or turn to social media. Regard this as a ‘reward’ for having Got Things Done!

Stop watching so much TV!

I’ve heard from people who tell me that they really don’t have time to work on their home business.

By the time they get back from work and have had something to eat and then some ‘me-time’ afterwards, they’re too tired to do anything else.

What is ‘me-time’? Ah, yes, it’s time to sit down and relax in front of the TV for a few hours.

So, they’re prepared to throw away their futures, give up on their goals, all for the sake of sitting, with their brains switched off, in the state of limbo that TV creates.

Yes, of course, it’s nice to switch your brain off and relax. But, please, do it as a reward when you Get Things Done!

If you prefer, use the old-fashioned way of keeping a notebook or journal of what needs doing and write yourself a To-Do List.

Or, for those like me, who prefer to use software to handle this task, with automatic reminders, use the Success Wizard App I show you how to use in this post:

How to Get Things Done with your own Success Wizard

One of the biggest problems marketers face in their daily lives is how to Get Things Done, often known as GTD. Seems like it’s too easy to be distracted and, before you know it, the day is nearly over and those important tasks remain unstarted.

Up until recently I was hoping my brain would sort this out all by itself. Big Mistake! No matter how high your commitment to Get Things Done, you can’t trust your brain to keep to what needs to be done as a matter of urgency.

On top of that, I’ve learned that we should be making new habits if we wish to achieve our goals in the shortest time possible. Staying focused on what you need to do each day to take the right steps along the path to reaching your goal is practically impossible if you just think or promise yourself that’s what you’re going to do.

Some people create To-Do Lists. Others make calendar entries. All well and good but the problem with these is that there is no one to nag you into doing them.

So, all too soon, you’ve logged on to your E-mail Inbox, or jumped into Facebook or YouTube and a couple of hours swing by without you muscling up to the Get Things Done list!

I’m going to solve that for you with an App I’ve been using (available for IOS or Android) that not only lets you set goals and the tasks you need to action each day to achieve them, but also nags at you to get them done.

The App is called Success Wizard and you can get it on the IOS App store as ‘Success Coach’

and on Google Apps as ‘Goal Setting Daily Planner’

Goal Setting Get Things Done

Here’s how it works…

First you set your Long Term Goal in the initial Wizard setup. This could be as simple as a financial goal, or income from your business, or replacing your salary and leaving your job. If a number of individual goals, for example Financial plus Health plus Relationships, combine to make your Long Term Goal a reality, set them up now.

Next you create Milestones which are Short Term Goals that you can focus on. I recommend that you set a yearly goal, a three month (90 Day) goal and a 30 Day goal.

Set Intermediate Goals - Milestones

The point of Milestones is to give you an initial target on which you MUST focus for the next 30 to 90 Days. When you achieve each Milestone you can pat yourself on the back, give yourself a reward, and bolster the belief that you WILL get things done. Milestones also allow you to chart your progress and make sure you stay on the right path to your goal.

Of course you won’t reach these Milestones unless you take action. So the next step is to create Activities. These can be something you need to do by a certain date or recurring Activities.

Recurring Activities can be Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Annually. Naturally, the Daily Activities are the ones to concentrate on as these are the key to Get Things Done. After setting these you can move on to the actions you need to take weekly or monthly.

Schedule your Activity

You can add an Activity by tapping the Activities icon in the bottom menu and then tapping the screen or clicking the + icon.

Give your activity a meaningful name like ‘Write Email’ or ‘Create FB Live’. Then you can choose whether this is a recurring activity or a one-off.

If you choose Recurring you can schedule Daily, Weekly or Monthly and the number of times your activity recurs.

Set the Duration

When you create an Activity, whether it is Daily, Weekly or Monthly, set the Duration to 25 minutes, even if you think it will take longer. Here’s why…

The natural time for 100% focus on any task is 25 minutes. After this, if you continue to work on your Activity, your productivity will fall and you’ll easily be distracted.

25 minutes

So set the duration to 25 minutes and, at the end of the time, stop working immediately, get up and go and do something completely different. Either get a drink of tea, coffee or water or take a short walk or do some press ups; anything which is not Work.

Do this not-work activity for 5 minutes and certainly no longer than 10 minutes and then return to your Activity for another 25 minutes or until you finish it if that’s within the next time slot.

If you want to know more about this I’ve summed up the research that led to this in my Daily Routine post. But, basically, that’s the technique as I’ve outlined it above.

Get Reminders

If you set your Activity to High Priority you’ll automatically get a reminder at the start of the day, as well as towards the end of the day if you haven’t completed it.

Alternatively, if you have set a specified Time for starting, you’ll get a Reminder to start at that time.

You can also add one-time Activities to your device’s Calendar or Google Calendar to remind you of your schedule for that date.

Either way, these are all excellent prompts to Get Things Done, which is what you’re really after.

Morning and Evening Routines

It is important to get into the habit of completing Activities at certain times each day, (I talk more about this in my Daily Routine post).

Success Wizard suggests that you commit yourself to entering your plan for the day under Morning Routine. I recommend that you jot down any New Ideas or To-Dos that have occurred to you when you wake up. Otherwise, you should follow the Activities that you’ve set in the Evening Routine.

It’s highly valuable to get into the habit of reviewing your day and setting out the Goals and Activities for the next day using the Evening Routine. This is best done before bedtime, when you can reflect on what you did and didn’t achieve that day and then make a promise to yourself that you will do better tomorrow.

Or pat yourself on the back if you made a massive leap forward that day and Journal it.

Success Wizard’s Evening Routine is expressly designed to help you learn from your mistakes, discover what easily distracts you and provides aids to help you figure out why you didn’t focus on your tasks.

Be ruthlessly honest with yourself.

Getting Things Done is not about being a slave to your Success Wizard task master! Rather it is about improving your focus by learning how to avoid distractions that are stopping you getting to where you want to be in life.

If you can be ruthlessly honest with yourself then Success Wizard will help you improve your life by refining your capability to focus on what needs doing to achieve your goals.

All you have to aim for is to get better and better by 1% each day. Now that’s not too much to ask is it?

Social Media Marketing Checklist

So you want to use social media to help market your business? Maybe you’ve already started but aren’t seeing the results you expected? Either way you need to go through this Social Media Marketing Checklist to make sure you are marketing on social media the right way.

You’ve already seen other marketers who are doing great using social media marketing. That’s not surprising, when you think about it, because social media IS where your best prospects are hanging out!

What you don’t see are the hundreds and thousands of marketers who are doing it all wrong. They’re shoving their opportunity or products down people’s throats, spamming groups with their links and making annoying comments on other people’s posts.

social media getting it wrong

This is not how to behave on social media. People don’t log on to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest to be sold – they want to be entertained.

Maybe you’ve tried some of these overt marketing tactics? No suprise, then, if they haven’t worked for you. But don’t despair, it’s not too late to change your ways for the better…

Here’s how to market on social media the right way

Once you go through this checklist you’ll take away all the worries you may have about marketing on social media the right way. Just tick off each question as you go and make sure you’re doing the right thing.

And be honest with yourself. If you follow this checklist faithfully you’ll be certain to pull in more leads and prospects in the next 90 days than you ever thought possible.

Sound good?

OK, let’s go…

Check #1 – What’s your target?

The first mistake that every new marketer on social media makes is not to have a clear idea of what they want to accomplish.

It’s no good just saying ‘I want more leads’ or ‘I want more sales’. As with every strategy you must have a clear vision of what you are trying to accomplish if you stand any hope of achieving it.

So get clear in your mind what your target is for your new social media marketing plan. Be very specific. Give a number for one or more of these goals that you feel you want to achieve in the next 30 days:

  • How many followers do you want?
  • How many Likes and Comments do you want to see for your Posts?
  • How many Views and Likes to your Page?
  • How many Leads do you want to generate?
  • How many Products do you want to sell?
  • How many new sign-ups to your email or Messenger list do you need to make?
  • How much do you want to earn from your strategy?

Your target should be big enough to make you uncomfortable but not so big that there is no way it is achievable.

For example a lot of people say they want to earn $10K a month without ever having earned a dime online before. While that is a good target to aim for once you’ve got something working, it is frankly unattainable in your very first 30 days.

Your target should be achievable so that you can give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back once you’ve made it. But, there again, don’t make it SO easy that you don’t bother to do much work to get to it.

Check #2: Who is your target audience?

Billions of people turn to social media every day. With the best will in the world, you can’t target all of them. In fact it is nonsense to try and even do so because it will just cost you too much time and money for negligible results.

It’s a BIG MISTAKE to try and target everybody!

target audience

Everybody is not your target audience. Only a small percentage of people who are likely to see your Post, Page, Video or Ad is going to be interested in what you have to offer. People don’t care about your product or service if they don’t know you, so stop trying to force it on them.

Far better to make sure that the people who ARE interested in what you can offer them can easily FIND YOU.

For example if you’re into Health & Fitness then who exactly do you want to talk to?

  • People who want to lose weight?
  • People who want to get fit?
  • People who want to build muscle?
  • People who want to combat their illness?
  • People who want to look younger?

You cannot serve all of these. Pick one and target that specific audience. The key to marketing to a target audience is to help them find YOU. Make it easy for them to seek you out, see you as an authority or expert who can help them get to where they want to be.

To define your target market, ask yourself these questions:

  • How old are they?
  • Are they married, with a family, or single?
  • Are they self-employed or working for someone else or a stay-at-home parent?
  • How much are they earning?
  • Where do they live – rented property, city apartment, own house?
  • What are their hopes and dreams?

Use this to build up an Avatar of the perfect prospect, someone who you would really like to help or work with.

Next you want to work out what is keeping them awake at night, worrying them, making them sweat and twist and turn until the early hours of the morning?

  • What is the biggest problem they are facing?
  • Why are they in this kind of trouble?
  • What are the underlying factors that have got them into this position?
  • Who are they struggling for – themselves or their family or both?
  • How can YOU help THEM?
  • What will happen after you help them solve their problem?
  • How will their life change?

The point of this exercise is to give you a vision of the ideal person that you can help so that you can focus on providing valuable content to your target audience that will attract them to you.

Check #3: Which Social Media Platform will YOU Master?

Most new marketers believe that they have to spread themselves thinly across a multitude of social media platforms to achieve success. They spend hours dabbling in Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and YouTube to little effect.

social marketing board

Do this and you’re aiming for failure. Spread yourself thin, like this, and you’ll quickly become discouraged by the minimal interest and interaction you achieve.

Instead, pick one Social Media strategy and focus all your energies on it until you master it. Only after you have achieved mastery (and can practically do it on autopilot) can you move on to another platform.

Here’s a guide to help you choose the ideal platform to master:

  • Which do you feel most capable of using?
  • Which is of most interest to you (do you use it already)?
  • Where is your audience most likely to hang out?
  • Which is the platform on which your audience is most likely to interact with you?
  • Based on your current lifestyle, which is likely to appear most attractive to your audience?

For example you may already have a lot of Instagram followers based on images you’ve been posting. It doesn’t take much of a twist to start to turn these followers into prospects, leads and customers.

Or you’ve been making funny or interesting videos on your YouTube channel and have built a series of subscribers.

If you’re just starting out, however, I recommend Facebook as a good place to begin focusing your strategy, simply because there are a number of great techniques you can use to attract people to you.

As I’ve said, the main thing is to pick just ONE platform and master it. Don’t agonise about your decision, just get started and worry about getting it right later.

Check #4: What IS your Social Media Strategy?

Up until now you’ve probably been taught or shown a zillion ways to try and trick the system. You may even have bought into software tools that purport to get you Likes or followers or views and subscribers without having to do much work.

How’s that worked out for you?

Frankly none of these reportedly labor-saving tricks and systems actually work. That’s because the companies that run social media platforms are already aware of them and have policies and algorithms that defeat all attempts at cheating or gaming the system.

So what should you be doing?

That’s simple. You should be concentrating on providing content that your target audience (remember them?) will find helps them, even if it’s only in a small way. It’s your content that is going to attract people to you.

Simply create content that shows that you empathise with their problem or predicament and show or hint at meaningful ways that can help them get themselves out of trouble. That will establish you, in their eyes, as an authority or expert that they will be delighted to follow.

What sort of content is suitable for your target audience?

That depends on the actual platform and is likely to be one of these:

  • Story Posts
  • Inspirational image quotes
  • Live videos
  • Success stories
  • Lifestyle images (before and after)
  • Funny, entertaining or viral memes or videos

Naturally, it is an ideal strategy to mix and match several of these and, whatever you choose, you need to inspire your audience to believe that they can achieve their goals, take the necessary steps to get closer to them and follow the simple steps that you show them to create small wins.

attraction marketing handshake

As long as you keep posting valuable content, your followers will continue to grow and some will join you, follow your recommendations and buy from you. Bear in mind that a lot will also stay on the sidelines, watching you.

That’s OK because, as long as people are following you, your authority and personal magnetism continue to grow. You are simply and easily building a tribe of people who are willing and ready to take your advice.

Whether they buy now or later doesn’t matter and you don’t need to concern yourself about that. Because all you’re doing is attracting the people who are most likely to buy, whether it is today, tomorrow or years in the future.

Check #5: How are you tracking your results?

Here’s a big tip: Top Earners always track their results. This allows them to test and tweak their strategy to optimize the work they are doing and show them what is working and what isn’t.

Then what do they do? They discard the methods that don’t work and build their business on the systems and strategies that DO work.

Social Media platforms all provide some obvious methods of tracking your success, such as Likes, Followers/Subscribers, Comments and other methods of engagement.

In addition, you can use tracking links to measure the success that you are having in directing people to your own website(s), blog, squeeze/landing pages and, from there, to your offers, products or opportunities. My favorite tracking tool is ClickMagick as it is the most flexible and informative I’ve found so far.

Here’s a guide that you can use to decide how you can best track your results: Guide To Click Tracking

What’s next?

Everything that you’ve been following in this Social Media Checklist is part of the Attraction Marketing method of using your favorite social media platform to build a tribe of people in your target market who want you to help them and guide them to achieving their goals.
